District Council Chairman Cropp and Councilmember Fenty Deliver Pen Pal Letters to In2Books Students

On December 1, 2004, City Council Chairman Linda Cropp, Councilmember Adrian Fenty, and In2Books Executive Director Vera Jackson delivered pen pal letters to District elementary schoolchildren as part of the In2Books literacy program. In the past, such dignitaries and In2Books supporters as D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams have hand-delivered pen pal letters to students.

"I'm pleased we have the In2Books program in the city," said Council Chairman Cropp, "In2Books is a model for public-private partnerships in our schools and has greatly contributed to the success of our children."

"This program is good for our children," said Councilmember Fenty, "In2Books provides both the books and educational support to build up literacy in our young people. In2Books is an important program to have in District schools."

"All children need quality instruction, intriguing books, and caring adult role models to succeed. In2Books is pleased to provide these elements to the students and teachers in D.C.'s public schools," said Vera Jackson, Vice President and Executive Director of In2Books. "We are honored to have Council Chairman Cropp and Councilmember Fenty showing their support for In2Books. This partnership demonstrates that the entire community is rooting for the success of the children in the District of Columbia and is willing to work together to help each child fully realize his or her potential."

In 2005, In2Books will serve over 6,000 students and nearly 300 teachers in about 70 schools, and involve more than 3,000 adult pen pals.
